Among the tree species covering the county’s soil,
the chestnut is assumed as an element of extreme importance in the
local economy, especially on the southern slope where
it has important patches of chestnut trees and castinçais, sources of
jobs and wealth.
Indeed, the craftsmanship that uses the chestnut as raw material, is a
value that is part of the cultural heritage of marvanenses, possessing
a large pool of variants, among which the traditional nut shell
embroidery, the stairs in chestnut wood and chestnut basketry.
The chestnut basketry is a set of twisted and intertwined, which
origin is linked to rural domestic life, as a means of
storage and transport of fruits and protections of household
utilities, including the basket manufacturing technique.
In addition to the handcrafts connected with the chestnut, we can also
find some objects crafted in wood, cork and clay.
