F.A.Q

1. What is the event Program?
The event is constituted by two stages on the 10th and 11th of May 2025.

2. I have never done Orienteering. Can I still participate?
Of course. All event organizers need to be prepared with monitors to teach and accompany groups. To participate as a group you must choose an open class. When registering for the event you should mention the need for the support of a monitor.

3. Can I participate as a Group?
You can participate as a group (invite your family and friends and discover Orienteering). Groups don’t have a limit to the number of participants, but if you want the support of a monitor they should not have more than 6 people. When registering for the event you should mention the personal details of all the members of the group.

4. How should I proceed to register for the event?
The preferred way to register for the event is through the Orioásis online portal. As an alternative, you may use the form that was created for this purpose (Registration Form) or through the email that can be found by following the registration link in the site menu: [email protected].

The registration fees can be found by following the registration link in the event site.

7. Can non-federated participants register in competition classes?
YES. In events that belong to the Portuguese Cup (Taça de Portugal), this isn’t possible. However, in some local events non-federated participants are allowed to participate in competition classes, as is the case with Matosinhos City Race. If you have never tried orienteering you should register for the Open Short (Open Curto) class where you can participate individually or as part of a group and even be accompanied by a monitor, if you request it at the start or during the registration process. If you already feel fully integrated in this sport you may register for the competition class that corresponds to your age, if you wish to (check the General Information page of the site for class details).

8. How do departures work in Orienteering events?
The start is done with a time trial system. The organization will publish start time lists for every class before the event. The published start times must be respected. Therefore, it isn’t necessary to create a waiting line in the start area. If you are unable to start at your allocated time, you may start at a later time. Your race time will start counting when you pick up your map and insert the electronic chip in the start control base. It should be noted that the start call time will be 3 minutes ahead of the real time (these 3 minutes are used by the organization to check your bib number, your chip number and to hand supplementary controls information).

9. Is road traffic interrupted in Orienteering events?
There might be urban events where traffic is interrupted, in particular in Sprint races, that are organized in historical areas. In races of the City Race circuit, such as Porto City Race, the traffic usually isn’t interrupted. In cases where the necessity arises, the organization might ask the Municipal Police to help control traffic in specific places. The organization asks that all participants have the utmost care when crossing streets.

10. What kind of clothes should be used during the event?
Although experienced athletes wear specific equipments, those that will try Orienteering for the first time may wear sports clothes or a track suit and sports shoes with some adherence to road surfaces. It is also recommended that participants have clothes and shoes to change into at the end of the event, in case it is needed.

11. What type of support tools can participants take during the event?
Participants can only take a compass with them.

12. Does the organization provide a compass?
The compass is a responsibility of the participants. The organization does not provide compasses for the participants, but you will be able to acquire a good quality complex and the event arena.

13. How is the event controlled?
The event will be controlled electronically with the Sport Ident control system. Each participant or group must carry an electronic card (chip). “In the case of an SI control station malfunction, the participant must puncture the reserve slots on the map with the station’s pliers. The punctured slots must be shown to the event judges at the finish.”.

14. How should I collect the chip?
The chip will be placed in the envelope that corresponds to the club or to the individual participant. Participants that use a chip that does not correspond to the chip registered with the organization will be disqualified.

15. What should I do if I don’t complete the course?
You must always go to the finish, download your chip’s data and return the chip if it was rented.
